Can Sadaqa al-Fitr Be Paid On Behalf of Other Mature Children?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Can a parent pay Sadaqa al-Fitr for a child who is a teenager and has some wealth, or does the zakat have to come from the child’s wealth?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health.

If the children are teenagers and live with you in a joint family and you pay Sadaqa al-Fitr on their behalf, there is no issue, and their Sadaqa al-Fitr will be paid. When children reach maturity (bulugh), a father usually carries out such tasks on behalf of his children.
