Is It OK for Women To Wear These Dresses at Home?

Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat

Question

If some individuals were to open an online adult toy store that only sold items that are halal to use, would there be any issue to it? This would mean not having explicit images or descriptions, among other relevant measures. I’m aware this is quite a taboo subject especially in certain cultures, but would being it being taboo be an area of Islamic consideration? Are there any other areas or topics of consideration if one were to open a store like this?

Answer

I pray you are well.

It’s best to pursue another means of income, in all honesty. One’s profession affects one’s standing in society, and this wouldn’t do you any favours in most religious circles.

The use of such adult toys is something scholars differ on, and those who allow it would condition the need to use only what was required and in a way that does not lead to harm or perversions.

The modesty Islam teaches us would steer one away from such a profession due to the nature of the extremes people go with such instruments. I would also assume it would be hard to navigate the industry whilst avoiding looking at impermissible images.

Having said that, it would be permissible to sell such items in a discreet way due to the need some people find for them, provided that neither you, nor your customers, are subjected to impermissible images, etc. The sales, free from such matters, would be valid and the income halal. May Allah bless you with the best of both worlds.
