Being Alone With a Driving Instructor of the Opposite Gender
Question Summary
What should I do if my driving instructor is of the opposite gender and we would be alone in the car during driving tests?
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate. May Allah guide every dimension of our lives to that which pleases Him.
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Whoever has faith in Allah and the Last Day, let him not be alone with an unrelated woman without her guardian. Verily, the third of them is Satan.” [Ahmad, Al-Musnad]
To the degree required, looking at and interacting with marriageable members of the opposite gender is permissible for undertaking commercial dealings, learning, teaching, etc. It is not permitted to exceed the degree required. [Keller, Reliance of the Traveler]
If you can acquire a male teacher, then you must do so. If you cannot, then attempt to have an additional person with you. If that is also not possible, try to remain visible (to the general public) for the duration of the lessons. [ibid.]
I pray this is of benefit and that Allah guides us all.
