Am I Allowed to Give My Disabled Sister to a Home Care?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I have a physically disabled sister; she can neither walk, talk nor look after herself. My parents have been looking after her since she was born, and their health condition has worsened over the years.
Suppose my parents were to pass away. Am I allowed to pay for a care home for my sister so she can be looked after? I intend on getting married and will likely be at work the majority of the day hours, during which I don’t want to burden my wife with this responsibility as it isn’t her duty.
So, In this case, am I allowed to give her to a care home and pay for it, or do I have to look after her and not get married?
Will I be sinful if I get married in this case?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Allah Most High, reward your parents for taking care of your sister in this world and, next, yourself too, for thinking of her continuous care and her future.
Yes, you will be allowed to give her to a care home in case you intend to get married, and you will not be able to care for her. However, consider a few things and take advice from local scholars and professionals to recommend a suitable, faith-based care home center that would take care of her personal care and Islamic needs.
Jabir ibn Abdullah (Allah bless him and give him peace) reported, The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Whoever has three daughters and he cares for them, he is merciful to them, and he clothes them, then Paradise is certainly required for him.” It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, what if he has only two?” The Prophet said, “Even two.” Some people thought that if they had said to him one, the Prophet would have said even one.
