Prophetic Lineage till Adam (upon Him Be Peace)
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
What is the lineage of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) until Adam (Upon him be peace)?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
The blessed lineage of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and give him peace) is preserved in detail up till his __ grandfather ‘Adnan. It is known by consensus that ‘Adnan’s lineage returns to Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) son of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) (upon them be peace).
The specific names of the forefathers between Prophets ‘Adnan and Ismail are not definitive. Likewise, the names of all the forefathers from Prophet Ismail to Prophet Adam are not definitive.
Many have opined guesses as to the names and order of the unconfirmed forefathers, but they are just that – guesses.
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace), when listing out his lineage, would not go beyond ‘Adnan. He would say, “The genealogists have lied. And Allah Most High says, “And between them are many generations.” [Ibn S’ad, Tabaqat Ibn S’ad; Ibn ‘Asakir, al-Tarikh ]
Imam Munawi (Allah be pleased with him) comments on this narration saying, “Since there were many many generations between the forefathers of ‘Adnan and Prophet Ismail (upon him be peace), anyone who claims to have exact knowledge is mistaken.” [Munawi, Faid al-Qadir]
The Prophet’s Lineage to Adnan
He is Muhammad son of Abdullah son of Abdul Muttalib son of Hashim son of Abd Manaf son of Qusayy son of Hakim (Kilab) son of Murra son of K’ab son of Lu’ayy son of Ghalib son of Fihr (Quraysh) son of Malik son of al-Nadr son of Kinana son of Khuzayma son of Mudrika son of Ilyas son of Mudar son of Nizar son of M’ad son of Adnan [Amiri, Bahja al-Mahafil]
