62 – The Central Pillar of Religion

In this episode Shaykh Yahya Rhodus highlights prayer as being the central pillar of religion. He quotes Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying: “Prayer is the central pillar of religion. Prayer is the key to every good.” Shaykh Yahya begins by explaining that the Arabic word for prayer is “salah”, which comes from the root word “silah” meaning connection. The at the heart of the meaning of prayer is that it is a connection to Allah Most High. He then goes to explain how the prayer is the central pillar of Islam, and how that should impact our lives with regards to the centrality of the prayer. Shaykh Yahya also provides some key tips on how to approach the prayer and perform the prayer. Finally, Shaykh Yahya explains how the prayer is a key to every good in this life, and ultimately in the afterlife.

The Content of Character is a remarkable collection of sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. Chosen by the scholar, Shaykh Al-Amin Ali Mazrui and translated by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, this book was published to great critical acclaim.

Shaykh Al-Amin intended to show that progress among Muslims required not the abandonment of Islam but the recovery of the original spirit of Islamic enlightenment.
