48 – Seeking Treatment

content_of_character1

In this episode Shaykh Yahya Rhodus highlights the teaching of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to seek out treatment for diseases. Shaykh Yahya relates that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: “seek out remedies for your ailments, oh servants of Allah, for Allah has not created a disease without creating a corresponding cure”. He points out that there are multiple lessons from this and similar narrations. One lesson we learn is that there is Divine wisdom  in how we have been created susceptible to getting ill. By getting ill we realize our weakness, which aids us to place our trust in our Lord. Another lesson is to learn how to interact with created means while placing our reliance in God. Finally, Shaykh Yahya reflects on how this teaching highlights the virtue of the science of medicine, and serving creation through it.

The Content of Character is a remarkable collection of sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. Chosen by the scholar, Shaykh Al-Amin Ali Mazrui and translated by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, this book was published to great critical acclaim.

Shaykh Al-Amin intended to show that progress among Muslims required not the abandonment of Islam but the recovery of the original spirit of Islamic enlightenment.

In this podcast series for SeekersHub, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus does a commentary on these concise and yet comprehensive sayings, with a special focus on character-building, morals, good manners and ethics.
