16- Allah’s Love and Renunciation of the World- Spiritual Counsel: Wisdom on Turning to God from the Islamic Tradition -Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

In this episode, Shaykh Faraz explains the thirty second to the thirty-fourth hadiths from the Chapter on Matters That Soften the Heart from the hadith compilation, Mishkat al-Masabih, compiled by Muḥammad ibn Abdullah Khatib al-Tabrizi (d. 741 AH). The thirty-second hadith relates to us that “the human being is not entitled to worldly matters except for a house to live in, garments to cover your nakedness and something of bread and water”. Shaykh Faraz explains that this is a call to focus on actual benefit in this life.

The thirty-third hadith teaches us the keys to attaining Allah’s love and the love of people: “renounce worldliness and Allah will love you, and renounce what is in the hands of people and people will love you”. Shaykh Faraz explains that worldliness is anything that distracts you from Allah. He also explains the degrees of renunciation (zuhd) and provides tips on how to attain it. The thirty-fourth hadith relates to us something about the state of renunciation of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says about himself: “what do I have in relation to worldliness, the relationship of me and this worldly life is like a rider who took shade under a tree and then he traveled on and left it behind”.
