How Can Muslims Deepen Their Daily Connection with the Quran?

Answered by Shaykh Anas al-Musa

Question

How can Muslims enhance their connection with the Quran in their daily life?

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger sent as a mercy to the worlds, our Master and Prophet, Muhammad, and his Family and Companions.

There is no doubt that enhancing a believer’s connection with the Quran in daily life is an important goal that should be pursued and achieved. This can be done through the following steps:

First: Daily Recitation and Reading of the Quran

Make sure to have a daily portion of Quran recitation, even if it is a small amount. The key is consistency, as regularity plays a significant role in strengthening your bond with the Quran.

Second: Reading at Night

Reading the Quran in the tranquility of the night while people are asleep creates a strong connection between the Quran and the reader. This time has a profound effect on the heart, as Allah says:

“Indeed, worship in the night is more impactful and suitable for recitation.” [Quran, 73:6].

Allah also says:

“Yet they are not all alike: there are some among the People of the Book who are upright, who recite Allah’s revelations throughout the night, prostrating (in prayer).” [Quran, 3:113]

Some scholars have mentioned that the best time to read the Quran is at dawn, based on Allah’s words:

“Observe the prayer from the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and the dawn prayer, for certainly the dawn prayer is witnessed (by angels).” [Quran, 17:78], meaning it is witnessed by the angels of the night and the angels of the day. Certainly, beginning the day with Quran recitation and remembrance of Allah brings tranquility and increases one’s connection to the Quran. [Nawawi, al-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalat al-Quran]

Third: Reflecting on the Quran and Contemplating its Meanings

Use books of tafsir (exegesis) to help understand the general meaning of the verses. Relate the verses you read to your daily life and apply them.

Fourth: Combining Reading and Listening to the Quran

Choose a reciter whose voice you enjoy and listen to their recitation. The pleasant sound and excellent rendition of Quranic recitation can evoke emotions and deepen your connection with the Quran, enhancing your relationship with it.

Fifth: Reading the Biography of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) and the Lives of the Righteous Predecessors and Their Relationship with the Quran

The Prophet’s connection with the Quran was very strong; he might recite a single verse and repeat it throughout the night. Abu Dharr reported that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) recited this verse and repeated it until the morning: “If You punish them, they belong to You after all. But if You forgive them, You are surely the Almighty, All-Wise.” [Quran, 5:118] [Ahmad]

Similarly, his companions (Allah be pleased with them) had a profound connection with the Quran. For example, Asma bint Abi Bakr recited Surat al-Tur, and when she reached the verse, “So Allah has graced us and protected us from the torment of (Hell’s) scorching heat.” [Quran, 52:27], she kept repeating it for so long that the narrator said: “I went to the market for some need, then returned, and she was still repeating it in prayer.” [Ibn Salam, Fada’il al-Quran]

Sixth: Supplication and Humility before Allah

Pray and implore Allah to strengthen your connection with the Quran and grant you the grace to receive its messages properly.

May Allah bless the Prophet Muhammad and give him peace, and his Family and Companions.

And Allah knows best.
