Does a Prohibitively Disliked Action Invalidate a Makeup Prayer?
Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi
Question
1. Doing makruh tahrima action in prayer means you have to repeat the prayer unless the prayer time exits right?
2. What if it was done in a Qaza prayer. Are they all void?
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
I pray this finds you in the best of states.
1. Yes, it would be sinful not to repeat a prayer in which a prohibitively disliked action has been committed within this prayer’s time.
The fatwa position of most of the later scholars is that if one performed a prayer with something prohibitively disliked (makruh tahriman), it is
(1) necessary (wajib) to repeat within the time; and
(2) not necessary to repeat after the time—but, instead, it is recommended to repeat.
[Haskafi, al-Durr al-Mukhtar; Tahtawi/Shurunbulali, Hashiyat ala Maraqi al-Falah]
2. No, a makeup prayer remains valid despite containing prohibitively disliked elements. [Shurunbulali, Nur al-Idah]
This is because all its obligatory (fard) elements have been performed. Validity is not dependent on anything else. [ibid]
It would be thus recommended to repeat it because the original time of this prayer has ended.
And Allah knows best.
Wassalam
