Can I Offer Friday Prayer in the University Instead of Local Masjid?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi
Question
If there is a local masjid having a Friday prayer, would it still be permissible to offer Friday Prayer at my University even though it is not a masjid?
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
I pray this finds you in the best of states.
It is permissible in your school to hold Friday prayers despite the presence of a local mosque nearby. The basis of this is that it is in itself permitted to have multiple Friday prayers in one city, in the Hanafi school. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
The fatwa is given that Friday prayer is valid in workplaces, schools, prisons, and other places that limit outsiders for reasonable reasons…
The above is the position that is acted upon by leading Mufti’s, including Mufti Taqi Usmani, and others. [Shaykh Faraz Rabbani]
And Allah knows best.
