Can a Vow Cause a Person to Burn in Hellfire Forever?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

If someone makes a consequence of breaking a vow that it will count as disrespect to Allah or that they will be happy with the disrespect towards Allah or that they will burn in the hellfire forever or that will become a kafir forever, or that they can not ever enter Islam again or if they say black magic will cause them to burn in hellfire forever or cause them to become a kafir forever, can these happen in the afterlife?

Can you answer this question in the context where they were said verbally?

If someone asks Allah not to ever take them out of hellfire or make them feel the fire for even a little bit, is it possible for that to happen? That person really loves Allah and Islam and only said these to ignore waswas. Is that kufr?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

These are just misgivings and thoughts you are fighting with yourself and your mind as you love Allah (Most High) and His Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). Do not worry. You are trying to show disgust and fear of entering the Hellfire. As long as one has fear and disgust for passing thoughts of unbelief (kufr) and the like, and does not make them convictions, they do no harm.

You seeking guidance to do away with such thoughts is a sign of sincerity and love for Allah and His Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace). A person will be with those whom he loves. You are certainly one of them, in sha Allah.

One Will Be The Hereafter With Those He Loves

Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace), and he said, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a man who loves a people but his deeds do not compare to theirs?” The Prophet said, “A person will be with those whom he loves.”
