Wedding Night

Question: Is it okay for my wife and I not to have intercourse on our wedding night?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

Whether or not you and your wife have intercourse on your wedding night has nothing to do with anyone else, be they your parents, family, or close friends.

As long as the two of you are alone in a room together, the marriage is considered finalized (dukhul) and the full dowry is due. That’s all anyone else needs to know (al Sunan al Kubra, Bayhaqi; al Hidaya, Marghinani).

If the two do not want to have intercourse, then there is no harm in delaying it until both feel comfortable about it.
