Is It Sufficient to Supplicate for Marriage and Just Sit and Wait?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

If a girl likes a boy and has the desire that they get married and she just supplicates that the groom proposes and that they marry and live happily ever after, and she just sits and waits, is that enough?

Will she get married this way?

Answer

Thank you for your question. Allah’s generosity works in wondrous ways, and if He desires something, it happens, whether one supplicated for it or not.

Supplicate First

When a woman wants to marry, it is a very good first step, to supplicate for it, because this will draw her near to her Lord, and Allah answers every supplication, according to how He deems fit, so she can’t lose. There are many etiquettes to supplication, and one should know them well. See them here:

Be Proactive

Allah does not need a supplication, in order to will something, but it is good for the servant to be in the habit of asking from Him. Should one do something more than supplicate? A woman should not throw herself at a man, in order to gain his attention, but rather she can ask her father, guardian, teacher, brother or friend, to be proactive in the process and talk to people. There is nothing wrong with this. Sometimes, a girl can meet a matchmaker who can help a family find someone suitable. There is no need to sit back and wait, though, some prefer to do it that way and they still get proposals in abundance.

Destiny

The key here is to remember that everything is pre-destined, and one should be satisfied with this. One doesn’t need to stress about what is unfolding for one, as what hits one was never going to miss, and what misses one, was never going to hit. However, supplication can still change some of one’s destiny, so one should supplicate as Allah loves to be asked.
