Will My Job Be Halal If I Doubt Taking More Time Than I Deserve in My Theoretical Exam?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I’m asking this because I want to earn halal money through a job that requires an M.Phil degree. I was giving a theoretical M.Phil exam. I felt I deserved more time to finish the exam, so I asked the invigilator for it, but he refused.

Finally, I became enraged with him. But then I wondered what if he had given me some extra time that I was unaware of and that I did not deserve. This event happened a year ago.

Can I give the benefit of the doubt after delaying the matter for so long?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health.

You didn’t do anything wrong, and talking to the invigilator during that time wasn’t wrong either. It was just a normal request from you as a student. Ignore the whole thing and don’t go back to think about it.

“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, although both are good. Strive for that which will benefit you, seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless. If anything befalls you, do not say, ‘if only I had done such and such’ rather say ‘Qaddara Allahu wa ma sha‘a fa’ala (Allah has decreed and whatever he wills, He does).’ For (saying) ‘If’ opens (the door) to the deeds of Shaytan.” [Ibn Maja]
