What to Do If We Get to Know of Our Mistakes Committed during ’Umra after Coming Back from the Trip?

Question

In 2008 we went for ‘umra in Ramadan for five days. My husband and I did four ‘umra. We entered Ihram during the flight as they announced our passing over the miqat.

After reaching makka, we performed ‘umra, and after it opened the ihram. But after it, we entered into ihram in our hotel and didn’t go to Masjid ‘Aisha for the ihram for new ‘umra. One of our religious friends in Ireland guided us and said once you entered the state of ihram after performing one ‘umra you can do ihram for the 2nd and 3rd ‘umra from where you stay.

So we entered into ihram in our hotel. I researched this and found it wrong, so what should we do? Please tell me as soon as possible because I’m very worried and afraid.

Answer

Do not worry. Yes, you should have entered into ihram from Masjid ‘Aisha, so doing so was wrong. To compensate for it, you each need to have a sheep sacrificed – one per incorrectly initiated ‘umra – in the Haram. Three for you and three for your husband. It cannot be done elsewhere. Seek Knowledge and Consult With Scholars

There is a lesson in this. Seeking knowledge yourself is paramount, as the validity of our worship is our responsibility. Not knowing how to perform a particular act of worship leads us to a disadvantage.

Advising Your Friend

You should tell your friend to repent and ask forgiveness for his advice. The last thing he wants to be is of the people, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) warned of when Allah takes scholars. He said, “Indeed, Allah does not just pluck away knowledge; rather, he removes it by taking scholars. Such that when He doesn’t leave any scholars, people take ignorant people as leaders. So when they are asked the answer without knowledge, they get lost and cause others to do so too.” [Bukhari]

His advice would have been correct for someone performing a tamattu’ Hajj. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in your case. May Allah accept all your worship and grant you the best of both worlds.
