What is the Duration for a Woman to Get Married after Her Father’s Demise?
Hanafi Fiqh

Question
One of my relatives whose father died recently, is looking for a husband to get married. Still, the community is saying that if a woman’s father dies and wants to get married, she must do it within 40 days of her father’s demise. Otherwise, she has to wait for one year to get married. Is this Islamically correct?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
This is incorrect and a superstition. One can get married when it is convenient for the family to prepare after the father’s demise. We have varying unfounded beliefs and superstitions from area to area. Ignore and educate the family and general public. Also, connect with local scholars in your country and consult them so they know about issues.
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrates, “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) used to love good omens and dislike bad ones.” [Ahmad]
