What If I Got Money from My Father for a Specific Course and Did a Different One?

This question haunts my sister. When she was in university, she wanted some money from our father. As you know, her guardian (wali) is responsible for her financial needs, but she is so concerned that she always asks her father for money. She told him she needed money for some big certifications but bought small online courses instead. She regrets it and wants to study from them for her earnings. Is it permissible for her to do so? What about her earnings? Will they be halal? Can she include those courses in her CV?

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Your sister should seek forgiveness for using the money for what she did not intend to use it for. She can still tell her father if she wants to make it acceptable.

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “Whoever deceives us is not of us.” [Muslim]

As far as her earnings are concerned, Islamically, it has no connection with the above.

The reason for this is that the wage she receives is in return for the work she does, and if she is fulfilling work-related duties and has the credentials, then she is entitled to the earnings. She can include the courses in her CV, too. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
