Is My Fajr Prayer during Which the Sun Might Have Risen Valid?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi
Question
I managed to pray my Fajr prayer just as the forbidden time was about to begin, but when I looked at the time on my phone, I think I completed it before the forbidden time began, but I’m unsure.
What should I do in this situation? I’m waiting instead of repeating my prayer since I believe it’s best to confirm it first.
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
I pray this finds you in the best of states.
In this situation you assume the validity of your prayer because of the following legal principle in Islamic law:
“Certainty is not lifted by a doubt.” [Ibn Nujaym, al-Ashbah wa’l Nadha’ir; Majallat al-Ahkam al-‘Adiliyya]
Who in turn is based on the following verse of the Quran:
“Most of them follow nothing but conjectures. Surely, conjectures are of no avail in the matter of truth at all.” [Quran, 10:36]
You had the certainty that the prayer time was there at the beginning of the prayer. This certainty is not lifted by your doubts regarding its departure. Thus you can assume the validity of your prayer.
