Is It Permissible to Use Sea Salt Spray and Volume Powder?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
In a previous question, I asked you about using clay in hair. I just remembered asking about sea salt spray and volume powder and whether they can be thoroughly washed out for the ghusl.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question. [Tahtawi, Hashiyat al-Tahtawi ‘ala Maraqi al-Falah]
Sea Salt Spray and Volume powder are permissible as long as they don’t contain any impermissible ingredient or form a perceptible barrier, a kind of layer upon the skin that prevents water penetration, it would be permissible to use. So, it would be best to ensure it is washed and removed before wudu or applied after wudu.
The ruling is that anything that prevents water from reaching the hair/body will not make the wudu or obligatory bath (fard ghusl) valid. [Ibid.]
How To Wash Out And Remove Sea Salt Spray and Volume Spray
Some sources say it can be tricky to wash off volume powder thoroughly. You may need to use a clarifying shampoo or repeat the shampooing process until your hair feels clean. Some volume powders have instructions on how to apply and wash them off, so you may want to check the label of your product.
Solution
It would be best to apply the product you intend to use after doing wudu; also, ensure that it is washed and removed when you need to do wudu again.
