Is It Permissible to Refer Someone to Open a Bank Account in Exchange for a Monetary Reward?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
Is it permissible/halal to refer people to a bank account and if the person joins, has id verified, and makes 3 purchases of at least £5 each then I (the person who refers) get a monetary reward? Just wanted to confirm if this is halal.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
It is permissible to refer someone to open a permissible non-usurious bank account, such as a checking account, and to receive a monetary reward for doing so. [Taqi Usmani, Fiqh al-Buyu’]
However, referring someone to open a usurious bank account, such as a savings account that accrues interest, is strictly prohibited as it is direct assistance in disobeying Allah Most High. [Ibid.]
Allah Most High says, “Cooperate with one another in goodness and righteousness, and do not cooperate in sin and transgression. And be mindful of Allah. Surely Allah is severe in punishment.” [Quran, 5:2]
Hope this helps
