Is It Necessary to Make Up An Invalidated, Non-Ramadan Fast?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam
Question
My question is on fasting outside of Ramadan. According to Hanafi Fiqh, is it necessary to make up a broken/incomplete fast if it is not during Ramadan?
Answer
I pray you are in the best health and faith, insha’Allah.
There is scholarly consensus that making up an invalidated obligatory (fard) fast is obligatory.
As for an invalidated sunna or voluntary fast, it would be necessary (wajib) to make this up. This is because of the principle that completing an act of worship voluntarily is necessary (al-shuru` mulzim). [`Ala al-Din `Abidin, al-Hadiyya al-`Ala’iyya; Haskafi, al-Durr al-Mukhtar]
And Allah alone gives success.
