Question

Does one have to make up (Qada) for an optional fast (Nafl) after breaking it?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

It is necessary (wajib) to make up (qada) a fast if one breaks it, whether it is due to an excuse or not.

If one breaks an optional fast due to the onset of menses, it will be necessary (wajib) to do makeup (qada) for it. Allah Most High said, “O believers! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and do not let your deeds be in vain.” [Quran, 47:33; Shurunbulali, Nur al-Idah; ‘Ala’ al-Din ‘Abidin, al-Hadiyya al-‘Ala’iyya]
