Can I Pray the Current Prayer While Owing Make-Up Prayer?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi

Question

I do ghusl and wudu according to an Islamic website, but can I pray according to SeekersGuidance? This website says that missed salaah with no valid reason cannot be made up and that if you remember that you have to redo your prayer, you have to make it up as soon as possible. If there is a call to prayer, and I pray, is my prayer invalid because I didn’t make up my other prayer?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

I pray this finds you in the best of states.

Making Up Prayers

From a previous answer at SeekersGuidance:

“According to the Hanafi school, if one has less than six prayers (salat) in one’s dues, it would be obligatory to maintain order between them. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah; ‘Ala al-Din ‘Abidin, al-Hadiyya al-‘Ala’iyya]

On the other hand, if one has six or more prayers (for example, Fajr, Dhuhr, ‘Asr, Maghrib, ‘Isha, and Fajr) in one’s dues, it would not be obligatory to maintain order between them.

Practically, if there are less than six prayers between one’s missed prayer and one’s current prayer, it would be obligatory to maintain the order.”

Learning Your Religion

Yes, if you cannot find a reliable teacher locally, I encourage you to rely primarily on SeekersGuidance because this institution specializes in teaching the rulings of Islam to a western audience efficiently and sensibly.

Rather than browsing through our answers on the website, it would be much easier to learn the basics of your Religion through one of our free courses.

I would recommend you start with this one:

You will be able to learn your religious duties in a systemic and organized manner, and you will be able to ask your questions in the forum to reliable teachers anytime you face difficulty. And again: it’s free.

And Allah knows best.
