Are We Allowed to Consume Honeycomb?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is honeycomb permissible to consume? I read that honeycombs ready for commercial use contain only honey and larvae are not there by a beekeeper on Quora.
As far as I know, there’s nothing to suggest that honeycomb is haram. I already know honey is permissible to consume. But honeycomb is what I am curious about.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health.
Similar to honey, a honeycomb is an edible substance made of hexagonal shapes created by honeybees. Thus it is permissible to eat. Both honey and honeycomb begin in the form of flower nectar. Upon the honeybees’ digestion and regurgitation, the nectar is turned into honey which can then be transformed into wax combs.
Eating honeycomb is one way you can enjoy the fruit of bees’ labor. Doing so may offer health benefits, ranging from a lower risk of infection to a healthier heart and liver. [Nahlawi, al-Durar al-Mubaha]
