Are Products by Dove Companies Permissible to Use?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I looked up whether Dove was halal. I went to the website titled “Let’s All Be Halal Here” and started browsing through it. It said that the Degree solid deodorants are halal. The dove goes sleeveless line is halal according to MCG (I can’t find info on MCG, though), and so are the sprays.
When I contacted the two companies, they said it depends on the source, which might be vegetable, beef, or pork. Because formulas might change, check the package for the most up-to-date information. Old spice is not guaranteed to be halal.
I’ve heard AXE employs animal components; do I need to contact them now?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health.
Dove products do not have a pig or its byproducts as ingredients. Some use animal ingredients. However, they go through a chemical transformation, thus permissible. Deodorants are permissible as they contain synthetic alcohol, not wine (khamr), which is impermissible and filthy. As a result, it is permitted for external uses such as perfumes, soaps, sprays, etc. [Mustafa Zarqa, Fatawa; Taqi Usmani, Takmilat Fath al-Mulhim; Taqi Usmani, Fiqh al-Buyu‘]
However, if you are unsure and it is causing you doubts and misgivings, then use products that are from a non-animal source, etc., like those shared in the links below.
