Is It Permissible to Use Human or Pig Waste as Fertilizer?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi
Question
Does using human or pig manure to fertilize crops make the resulting vegetables or crops haram to eat because pig or human excrement is haram?
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
I pray this finds you in the best of states.
Yes, it is permissible to eat from crops that have been produced through the use of manure, regardless of its origin, even if it is from a pig. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
Mixed Human Excrements
If human excrement has been mixed with other materials, such as earth or ashes, while being overcome by it, it becomes lawful to sell it and use it as manure, for example. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
Unmixed Human Excrements
As for unmixed human excrement, it is invalid to buy and use. Instead, it is obligatory to dispose of them by burying them. [Ibid]
And Allah knows best.
