Are Products Containing Alcohol Denat Permissible to Use?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Please help me with the following: most hair loss or growth shampoos or serums contain Alcohol Denat. Are we allowed to use this? If you can, kindly let me know if it is halal to use or not if it contains this ingredient.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
Any product that contains alcohol denat is permissible and halal to use. The ethanol used in cosmetic formulations is typically denatured, which creates a bitter taste. Denatured alcohol appears in a cosmetic ingredient listing either as SD Alcohol or Alcohol Denat. See the links below. [Usmani, Takmila al-Fath al-Mulhim]
