What Does the Statement “He will sink down the seven earths on the Day of Resurrection”(2454 Bukhari) Mean?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I wanted to ask about the statement, “He will sink down the seven earths on the Day of Resurrection” (2454 Bukhari).
Is it to be taken metaphorically or in a literal sense because according to Quran 55:33, on the day of Judgement, we won’t be able to leave the universe? So how can someone sink down to the other earth, which is in the others of seven heavens, when according to this verse, we won’t be able to leave worldly heaven? I think there are other opinions about the seven earths than each being in the seven heavens. But even if so, how do we reconcile this with this opinion?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
The sin of the one who usurps the land of others is mentioned in the following hadith, and it is to be taken as a severe type of rebuke:
Abdullah narrates from the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) that he said, “Whoever takes a piece of the land of others unjustly, he will sink the seven earths on the Day of Resurrection.” [Bukhari]
The usurped piece of land will be wrapped around one’s neck, like a collar or hoop. Some say one will be burdened and charged to lift the amount of land.
