Making the Intention for Missed Prayer

Question: Does one have to intend an obligatory prayer as either specifically current performance (ada) or makeup (qada)?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

In general, you do not need to intend whether or not a prayer is a current performance (ada) or a make up (qada).

If one however intends both that it is a current performance and a make-up, the prayer would be invalid (Bushra al Karim, Ba Ishn).

If one repeats a prayer (meaning praying it again in its time after having validly performed it) and does not intend that it is either specifically a current performance and a makeup, then there is a strong argument to say that it counts as a makeup (Hashiya Tuhfat al Muhtaj, Ibn Qasim; Hashiya Tuhfat al Muhtaj, Sharwani).

If however, one repeated the prayer because it was invalid, then it would simply count as current performance.

I pray this helps.
