Is It OK to Be a Reclusive Person in Islam?
Answered by Imam Yama Niazi
Question:
Answer:
Being recluse
If we were to define recluse by saying it means,’ a person who stays away from others and avoids other people.’ Then indeed, in that case, it is allowed. There are benefits to drawing away from people. However, do keep in mind the following Hadith:
Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “The believer who mixes with people and patiently bears their annoyance is better than the believer who does not mix with people or patiently bears their annoyance.” [Ibn Maja]
So a person should live among other people, enjoining good and forbidding evil, treating them well, and displaying excellent conduct rather than isolating himself and remaining aloof.
Being sociable
One of the great scholars advised others the following when asked about starting a new year at college or university:
“Go with the intention of dawah (calling people to Allah) and having a good effect on those around you by displaying kindness and good character. Engage with people and clarify the teachings of Islam when the opportunity arises. Seek to be among those mentioned in the Hadith who mix with people and patiently bear any harm they receive from them (who are better than those who do not mix with people and do not patiently bear any harm). Strive to lower your gaze when this is required and maintain a good opinion of people. Be among those who remember Allah amidst those who are heedless of Him.”
Summary
Although other Hadith encourage living in isolation being virtuous, it all comes down to a person’s state. If they fear they will fall into sin by mixing with others and harming others by their tongue, or even with other ways, then isolation is better. If they don’t fear for their religion, then being sociable is preferred.
