Can I Do Some Work for a University Event Which Has Haram Activities?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
My university has a major event that includes VIP guest talks, recreational activities like dinner/car shows, useful competitions (helping students with their CVs), or recreational competitions like sports, e-gaming, etc. There is an entry fee, but the prize is fixed and not dependent on how many people participate. However, the event has three issues—a concert, Qawwali night, and maybe a Ludo tournament.
I want to improve my ability to talk to multiple people and overcome my shyness. For that, I can work in the registration (accommodations, payments, entry passes) or security team (ensure only allowed people enter events).
I want to know if it is haram or halal, and if so, in what capacity, i.e., only living accommodations for me to volunteer?
Answer
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
It would be permissible to attend the event as most of the activities are permissible except for the concert. Avoid the concert and leave before that, and avoid and limit dealing with men navigating your way and following the rules of gender interaction. See the valuable guidelines and links below.
