Will Allah (Most High) Forgive Me If I Repent after Having Wronged Someone and They Have Cursed Me?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I just have this burning question, what if someone curses someone because they have wronged them, but realizes and apologizes later? But the one who cursed did not forgive the one who wronged him?

Is asking for forgiveness from Allah (Most High) protect that person from the curses? Or making dua for the wronged person will cancel the curses that he/she gave?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good health and faith.

Your regret is a significant step forward in this situation. If you have wronged someone, you should try to apologize to him in person, or if it is an item or money, return what you have in your possession to him, if possible, through another means, such as a third person, letter, etc. If you can’t, ask for forgiveness for yourself and him all the time. Allah (Most High) will forgive you for asking forgiveness for him, and his heart will soften and turn toward forgiveness.

It is mentioned by Ibn Abi al-Dunya from Anas (Allah bless him and give him peace) that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “The expiation of a person whom you have slandered is that you seek forgiveness for him.” [Nahlawi, al-Durar al-Mubaha]

Ubadah ibn al-Samit reported, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Whoever seeks forgiveness for the believing men and women, Allah will record a good deed for him by each man and woman.” [Tabarani, Musnad al-Shamiyin]

Abu Razin reported: A man came to Fudayl ibn Bazwan, (may Allah have mercy on him) and he said, “Indeed, a man has slandered you!” Fudayl said, “Verily, I will infuriate the one who commanded him! May Allah forgive me and forgive him.” It was said, “Who has commanded him?” Fudayl said, “Satan.” Ibn Farafisa said, “Whoever seeks forgiveness for his oppressor has defeated Satan.” [Ibn al-Mubarak, al-Zuhd wa al-Raqa’iq]

Memorize and make the following beautiful dua for that person of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), even he did not curse or spoke vulgar against anyone, but He has taught us this profound dua. It has been reported by Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him), the messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:

“O Allah, I am asking of You a promise, You will not break it, indeed I am a human, any believer whom I give pain to, speak vulgar to, whip or curse him, then make it a means of mercy, purification and nearness for him unto You on the Day of Judgement.” [Bukhari; Muslim]

Have hope in Allah (Most High), He will turn and soften the heart of the other person, the matter is you have regret and remorse, and this is the essence of repentance.

I pray this helps in your question.
