What Is the Ruling on Living in a Sorority?

Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick

Question

Is it lawful to live at the kappa house? It says it’s a Greek house, so would that be shirk? It is for girls only and on campus, so it’s convenient and looks fun. It’s a society with connections with Greek mythology, so would it be permissible for me to live there if I don’t believe in it and just want to be there for socialization, fun, and convenience?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

May Allah alleviate our difficulties and guide us to what pleases Him. Amin.

Based on the provided information and links, living at Kappa House appears to be permissible. No explicit religious or anti-Islamic values are mentioned, nor are any ties to Greek mythology. Using the Greek alphabet in the naming scheme is not enough to establish a connection to elements of shirk (polytheism), and Allah knows best.

If there were Greek mythology considerations in the adaptation of the name and values of the house, this would not render living there impermissible unless the beliefs, values, and practices were enforced, and Allah knows best.

We must also caution you of the general dangers to one’s religious practice, values, and identity at Western Universities.

Association with Greek Culture and Mythology

Living in a place connected with Greek mythology or culture is not inherently shirk (associating partners with Allah). Shirk involves attributing partners or associates to Allah in His divinity, a grave sin in Islam. However, it is essential to avoid engaging in practices or beliefs that conflict with Islamic monotheism (Tawhid).

Socialization, Fun, and Convenience

Suppose you intend to live in this accommodation purely for permissible socialization, fun, and convenience, and you do not intend to participate in or promote any activities that contradict Islamic values. In that case, it may be permissible, provided the following conditions are met:

  • Avoidance of Unlawful Activities: Ensure that no “kappa house” activities involve haram (forbidden) elements such as unlawful partying, alcohol consumption, or other prohibited behaviors.
  • Maintaining Your Islamic Identity: While socializing and enjoying conveniences, it is crucial to uphold your Islamic identity by fulfilling your religious obligations, such as daily prayers, modesty, and ethical conduct.
  • Avoiding Compromises in Beliefs: Make it clear that you do not subscribe to or participate in any beliefs or practices associated with Greek mythology or any other faith that contradicts Islam.
  • Consultation with Scholars: Given the specific details of your situation, it is advisable to consult with a local, knowledgeable Islamic scholar or a religious authority who can provide more precise guidance based on the particular circumstances and the activities conducted in your region, culture, and the “kappa house.”

It is important to remember that the permissibility of your choice may vary depending on the specific practices, atmosphere, and policies of the “kappa house” in question. Islam encourages socializing and building positive relationships with others, but it also emphasizes the importance of maintaining one’s faith and moral principles.

Ultimately, your intention and commitment to upholding Islamic values in any environment should be your guiding principles. Seekers of Islamic guidance should always prioritize the well-being of their faith and character when making such decisions. May Allah guide you to make choices that are pleasing to Him and beneficial for your spiritual growth.
