Is There Any Negative Impact of a Name on a Person’s Life?
Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad
Question
My name is Mehrunnisa. I face many problems, hurdles, and delays in everything I do. I’m 34 and not yet married. Some people say it’s because of my name. Is it true? And if I want to change my name, what should it be? Can you please guide me?
Answer
There is nothing wrong with your name, and it is not the reason for any hurdles you face.
Your name in Arabic is “the dowry of women,” while I have read that in another language, it means “the sun of women.”
When you face problems in life, you must see them as a test and opportunity and be proactive to get closer to your Lord. Ensure that you are praying and paying zakat on time.
Ensure that you keep away from usury and non-halal food. Ensure that you cover correctly and read some Quran every day.
Ensure that you learn the basics of your deen and strive to purify yourself inward and outward.
Allah wants you to call out and supplicate to Him. You can pray the Prayer of Need and tahajjud; give a part of your night to Him while everyone else is asleep. This will give you peace no matter what you face.
The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Allah descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the first part of the night is over and says: I am the Lord; I am the Lord: who is there to supplicate Me so that I answer him? Who is there to beg of Me so that I grant him? Who is there to beg forgiveness from Me so that I forgive him? He continues like this till the day breaks. “[Muslim]
I also suggest you start a gratitude journal where you write what you are grateful for every day and thank Allah for it. Allah will surely increase you.
Allah, Most High says, “And ˹remember˺ when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will certainly give you more. But if you are ungrateful, surely My punishment is severe.’” [Quran, 14:7]
I guarantee you that changing your name will not change anything. May Allah increase you and give you the best in this world and the next.
