How To Accept My Fiancé’s Past and Have Peace of Mind for the Future?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
My fiancé is a pious man with good deen and character. He prays five times a day and regularly reads Quran. He recently revealed that he wasn’t inclined towards religion before, didn’t pray regularly, and committed sins, including fornication.
His family and mine do not know about this. I have decided to overlook his past as he regrets it and has asked Allah for repentance. And we have promised never to mention it again. I have two fears, though: How can I be sure of a person’s change of heart? How can I forget his past for my peace of mind?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
It is a good sign that your fiance performs his five daily prayers and recites the Quran regularly. Also, for him to reveal his past is a sign of his honesty which he didn’t have to tell anyway.
This may be a way of him giving you peace of mind and assurance for the future. Your fiancé now practicing is a sign of his true repentance and its acceptance, so have a good opinion of him now and of the end, as true repentance wipes away all sins.
Actual Repentance Wipes Away All Sins
Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The one who completely repented of sin is like one without sin.” [Ibn Maja]
Allah Most High creates love, harmony, and true bonding between you and a means of healthy and righteous offspring, Amin.
