Can the Couples Stay Together Right after Nikah before Rukhsati?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is it permissible for the bride and groom to stay together after the nikah ceremony with the intention of completing the rest of the wedding events a few months later?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are well.

Once a nikah takes place, it is permissible for the married couple to enjoy marital rights, from meeting each other to intimacy.

If the couple and families have agreed to delay the rukhsati, they should follow the custom. Jurists mention that people’s customary practice (urf) is legal proof and must be considered. If they wish to meet and have intimacy with consent, then they may do so, too. However, the family agreed upon custom would be better to follow, so anything wrong or misunderstanding affecting the couple and family does not occur.
