Can I Eat Lawful Food That I Thought Was Unlawful?
Answered by Shaykh Irshaad Sedick
Question
Years ago, my friend thought that if he ate a certain lawful dish, he would be a disbeliever or cursed because he didn’t like it. He only thought that but didn’t say it. He also asked for forgiveness after that, so can he eat it now or not?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
May Allah alleviate our difficulties and guide us to that which is pleasing to Him. Amin.
The lawful status of eating food does not change because of our thoughts, so the food was and remains permissible to consume, and Allah knows best.
Allah says: “O believers! Do not forbid the good things which Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors. Eat of the good, lawful things provided to you by Allah. And be mindful of Allah in Whom you believe.” [Quran, 587-88]
