Is My Fast Broken If I Felt Mucus Entering My Throat Though I Meant to Spit It Out?
Shafi'i Fiqh
Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad
Question
Is doubting if one broke the fast breaks the fast? I sniffed mucus from my nose to bring it to my mouth to spit it out, but then I felt something in my throat. However, I am not sure if that was the mucus I sniffed.
Since Ramadan began, I am unsure if any of my fasts have been valid. I do not know if this is waswasa or not.
Answer
Thank you for your question. May Allah reward you for fasting and for asking to clarify your doubts. May He accept all of your worship and reward you abundantly.
Mucus While Fasting
Please assume that your fasts are all valid and see the details here:
- Does Sniffing or Swallowing Mucus Nullify My Fasting or Prayer?
- Does Swallowing Mucus Still Break One’s Fast If There Is Hardship in Avoiding It?
- Swallowing phlegm while fasting

May Allah give you the best of this world and the next.
