Question
Is it permissible to work in a laboratory studying various types of alcohol?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
Yes. It is permissible to study various types of non-wine alcohol.
There is nothing in the Sacred law that would prohibit such studies, especially since the relied-upon position in the Hanafi school is that non-wine alcohol is generally pure. [Tahtawi/Shurunbulali, Hashiyat Maraqi al-Falah]
This is especially true if such study translates into knowledge that is beneficial to humanity.
