Is It Permissible for Me to Assist at a University Event While Missing Classes?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I want to assist at a campus event, but I’ll have to miss one class. I intended to catch it up as I have days without any lessons.
However, I recently read that I must participate in “all scheduled learning and teaching sessions,” so is the money I earn from helping at the university event haram?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. It is good of you to try to be punctual in your lessons. May it continue and bring about ease in your studies.
As the assistance involves you helping at the university itself, it would be assumed that they are aware of students joining in to help and assist, ideally in their free time and on non-teaching days. However, the money you would earn would not be impermissible if you were to miss lessons and go out to assist.
Allah Most High said, “Cooperate with one another in goodness and righteousness, and do not cooperate in sin and transgression.” [Quran, 5:2]
The requirement upon you by the university to attend all lessons is a rule by the university, which is a separate matter that you must follow. However, you will make up for the missed classes later on anyway.
