Will I Be Rewarded for Performing an Act of Worship While Leaving Its Sunna Components?

Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi

Question

If an action such as prayer or wudhu for example, was completed without doing the sunnas of these actions, would all the reward be lost of these actions?

Answer

I pray this finds you in the best of states.
You will still be rewarded for performing the obligatory ( fard) elements of these acts of worship.

Allah, Most High, says: ” So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it.” [99.7]

The Messenger of Allah (Blessings and Peace of Allah be upon him) said, “Verily Allah, Most High, has said: ‘Whosoever shows enmity to a wali (friend) of Mine, then I have declared war against him. And My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more loved to Me than the religious duties (fard) I have obligated upon him. And My servant continues to draw near to me with nafil (supererogatory) deeds until I Love him. “ [Bukhari]

Based on this hadith, scholars have determined that obligatory (fard) acts of worship are better than voluntary acts of worship. There are some exceptions. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

Nonetheless, please remember that it can become sinful to leave the emphasized sunnas without excuse and to make a habit of it. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

And Allah knows best.
